In this session you’ll get hands-on with a range of paper decoration techniques to create a vibrant collection of one-of-a-kind sheets to house in a crown binding of your own making. This workshop is a joyful introduction to the world of decorative paper and book arts, whether you’re drawn to it as a beautiful object in its own right, an artist book waiting to unfold, or the start of a treasured album.
This workshop is an ideal introduction to artist bookmaking, whether you’re looking for new ways to present your prints, sketches and mixed media work, or simply want to explore creative paper structures and handmade books.
The workshop takes place over two sessions – we explore paste paper making in the first session, and then once dry (and pressed) we use these to make various different book structures – pamphlets, wrappers, accordion books, slipcases and crown books. We usually make two of these structures in a single session.
Chinese Thread Books

In this fun 4 hr afternoon session with Ivan Salcedo you will make a version of a Zhen Xin Bao, with an expanding folder for it to sit in.
A special gift for a friend or something unique to keep yourself.
Traditionally used to store threads and needles, these make great gifts, and can also house other shallow or flat items like letters, photos or coins. There are now many variations of these ‘books’, although they all have layers of pockets that stack ingeniously on top of each other. In this case the topmost layer uses decorative folds to resemble flowers.
No prior knowledge is required, although origami experience is helpful.
Expect to make one complete ‘book’ and enclosure in the time available.
