You could have a point. I'm partial to Gin-Soaked Boy because it slowly builds, has a hummable quality and bears repeated listening at high volume. Plus very difficult not to dance a little bit during the hook.

I like that, and once again bow down to your superior knowledge of antipodean music. It's a little too pragmatic, and well, oz, for my purposes, though - I think I'll go for overblown and incomprehensible:

Echo & the Bunnymen - The Cutter
or the teensy-weensy over-reaction of:
The Streets - Stay Positive - mainly because I've always loved the line 'when shit goes pear-shaped'.

Although I suspect that there's a Neil Hannon song out there that says everything I want to, and says it better.

Not exactly right for the circumstances (except perhaps the last two lines of each chorus), but you can certainly work off a lot of irritation by pogoing around to You Shit Me To Tears by The Tenants:

Turning hurt into indignation into creative energy has worked for me in the past.

That's the one - I worked on it some time ago. They have grants for different genres. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Thanks, Laurence. 'Levelling up' I guess is a little too gamer-nerd. I've changed it for a more formal and correct phrase, and I'm de-emphasising the game in any case.

Thanks Keith. As it happens you nudged me towards reviewing the excellent videos that are on the Scrivener site, and after a little hard work, I now have the edited manuscript back in Scrivener (and split back into chapters) - and I'm a little clearer on the formatting mess that I got myself into.

It's all part of the learning process, I guess, but I'm getting more and more comfortable with the Scrivener workflow - and my next novel will be a lot easier to write as a result.

For anyone following the thread of this - the teaser and the name of the novel were changed in a last minute fit of 'make it less complicated'. Not sure if that was wise or not....

Thanks, Carl. Not sure about competitions, but the Arts Council do give grants to authors (there was one on the Arvon retreat I went on). I'll look into it, but I think it's unlikely I'd qualify.

Good luck with it - may you find a publisher soon! Do the Arts Council still run an annual competition for authors?

Well I'd buy it. That's my vote.

Only one line in the teaser threw me. What does "...including discovering a treasure more precious to Tom than, well, levelling up as Monk Quixote will ever be" mean? I didn't understand the use of the word levelling in that context.
